Only ten days ago I moved from rainy Belgium to hot and busy Kingston. I just completed my first week at the UNEP CAR/RCU office and am looking forward to the experiences and discoveries that are awaiting me in the next three months.

I was very glad to be warmly welcomed by my colleagues at the office and was particularly happy to meet the other three interns, who did not only help me to settle in at work, but also gave me many tips on life in Kingston and the places to visit on weekends.

During my first days,I familiarized myself with the current activities at the UNEP CAR/RCU office and in particular, with the projects related to SPAW (Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife). On Friday I attended my first meeting and enjoyed receiving an insight into project management activities at the UNEP CAR/RCU and the topics that I will be working on.

Challenges faced:

Overall, I have come across a large number of new projects and information and still get confused sometimes. Nevertheless, I am sure that this will get better over the next weeks and my new colleagues have been very understanding and are giving me a lot of time to get acquainted with the new topics.

Lessons learned:

During this first week I feel like I have already learned a lot about the countries in the Caribbean Region and their marine environments, still, I am certain that I have only looked at the tip of the iceberg!

Also, when going to the countryside in Jamaica, take some sun cream and mosquito repellent with you (and do not forget to apply it…)!
