Coming into UNEP as an intern, I was very excited on my first day to learn about the work I’d be doing with the Communication, Training and Awareness (CETA) programme. My first day here, a Friday, was spent mostly as a day of orientation during which I was introduced to the staff and other interns, shown around the office, and finally attended a meeting the CETA programme Officer had organized for myself and the four other interns. The P.O of CETA (who is also my supervisor) gave a comprehensive presentation explaining the work the Caribbean Environment programme (CEP) does through its different projects, in particular, CETA.

I’ve been here for a little over one month, and a lot has happened since my last entry. As I mentioned, I assisted in researching facts for CEP’s upcoming Kid’s Page. Since then, the website has mostly been completed, and presently a Marine Litter interactive game is being developed. I have had the opportunity to sit in on various electronic meetings with the professionals developing the game for CEP. It’s been very interesting learning about the game-making process, and being able to provide input. I’m very excited for the game to be up and running!  I have been learning a lot about what goes into creating a website. Last month, I helped to categorize data for the regional laboratory database which will be a part of the CEP website.

Today was the last intern session as most of the interns will have completed their internships in a few weeks; I assisted once more in bringing in a caterer for the heavy coffee break part of the session. Each of us presented on the work we have been doing in our respective programs. I’m still working on the abstracts for the reports, there are a lot of them but I hope to have them completed in the next two weeks as I find a working balance with my other tasks.

The highlight of the past few weeks is without a doubt the field trip I got the chance to go on! UNEP CEP was asked to give a presentation on Protecting the Environment to a group of 7th and 8th graders as part of Dream Jamaica’s Summer Exploration Programme. I was very excited to go as I had been hoping something like this would pop up at least once during my internship, and it did!

My internship at CEP has reached its end after three months. It’s been three months of learning, learning and learning some more. As the weeks went by I saw improvements in every aspect of my work.
