The International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences is currently
offering PM and MSc courses in Water Resources and Environmental Management with
specializations in Watershed Management, Conservation and River Basin Planning. All
courses begin in September 2002. For participants from selected developing
countries, the Netherlands Government awards a number of fellowships under the Netherlands
Fellowship programme (NFP). Applications for fellowships must be submitted before
March 2002.

Central American Course on Aquatic Ecotoxicology
The Instituto Regional de Estudios en Sustancias Tóxicas (IRET), Universidad
Nacional, Costa Rica in collaboration with the Ecology of Systems Department at the
University of Stockholm, Sweden and the Centro de Investigación en Alimentación y
Desarrollo - unidad Mazatlán en Acuicultura y Manejo Ambiental de México will be
offering the Second Central American Course on Aquatic Ecotoxicology.
The objectives of the course are:
* to improve the level of training for Central American professionals in the field
of aquatic ecotoxicology;
* to sensitize participants of the need to develop strategies to evaluate, prevent
and reduce the environemntal risks associated with the use of toxic substances in the
region;
* to promote the use of ecotoxicological methods of analyses.
The course will be conducted at Universidad Nacional, Heredia, Costa Rica.
Course duration is two weeks running from 4 March to 14 March, 2002. The
lanuages of the course are English and Spanish.

Integrated Coastal Zone Management Course for Harbour
Development
The Instituto Latinoamericano de Ciencias Marinas y del Ambiente (ILCMA) along
with the Centro del Agua del Trópico Humedo para America Latina y el Caribe and the
United Nations Environment Programme will be hosting the first Integrated Coastal Zone
Management Course for Harbour Development from April 22 -26 , 2002, in Panama City,
Panama. Topics to be discussed include:

* Harbour Expansion and Integrated Coastal Zone Management

International Ocean Institute - Training
Programme
The International Oceans Institute of Canada (IOIC) is dedicated to
achieving its mission through training and education, applied research, policy advice,
consultative services, publications, awareness building, and outreach programming.
The Virtual University is one of its many programmes that grew out of the need for
training and education to facilitate the implementation of environmental rules and
regulations in the twenty-first century. IOIC intend to go on-line with the first
courses next fall.
In the meantime, however, IOIC are running their normal ten-week
training programmes. Scholarships are also available for candidates from the
Caribbean region. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is 31st

Curso Centroamericano de
Ecotoxicología Acuática
El Instituto Regional de Estudios en Sustancias Tóxicas (IRET)
Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica, junto con el Departamento de Ecología de Sistemas de la
Universidad de Estocolmo, Suecia y el Centro de Investigación en Alimentación y
Desarrollo - unidad Mazatlán en Acuicultura y Manejo Ambiental de México, unen
esfuerzos, recursos y conocimientos para ofrecer el Segundo curso Centroamericano de
Ecotoxicología Acuática.
Los objetivos del curso son:
- Capacitar profesionales centroamericanos en el campo de la ecotoxicología
acuática.
- Sensibilizar y motivar a los participantes respecto a la necesidad de desarrollar
estrategias para evaluar, prevenir y reducir el riesgo ambiental asociado con el uso de
las sustancias tóxicas en la región.
- Promover el uso de métodos de análisis ecotoxicológicos en la región.
El curso se impartirá en la Universidad Nacional, Heredia, Costa
Rica. El curso tendrá una duración de dos semanas, inicia el 4 de marzo y finaliza
el 14 de marzo 2002. El curso se impartirá en idioma español e inglés. Algunos
materiales didácticos son en inglés.

Desarrollo Portuario
El Instituto Latinoamericano de Ciencias Marinas y del Ambiente

Summer
Course - Tropical Marine Invertebrate Biology
The Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory of the University of the West
Indies, Jamaica will be hosting a summer course on Tropical Marine Invertebrate Biology
from 30 June - 14 July, 2002. The course aims to increase students' knowledge of the
biology and biodiversity of marine invertebrate animals and of methodologies for marine
biological fieldwork through intensive, direct experience. Please note that all
students must be confident of their swimming skills. Applications will be reviewed
