Capitalization and Sustainability of Natural Assets and their
Environmental Services
The National Institute of Biodiversity of Costa Rica (INBio) and the Political
Institute for Sustainability (IPS) are offering a course in "Capitalization and
Sustainability of Natural Assets and their Environmental Services" that will take
place the 24 - 28 September 2001 in Santo Domingo de Heredia in Costa Rica. The course is
directed to professionals of governmental institutions, NGO conservationists,
international and regional organizations, universities and administrators in water
resources, forestry, tourism and biology. An academic degree is recommended, as well as
relevant experience. Course will be given in Spanish, and fluency in Spanish is therefore
a requirement.
The course fee is US$ 1275, which includes room and board. Travel expenses to
Costa Rica are not included.

Environmental Chemistry Regional Course
The Instituto Regional de Estudios en Sustancias Tóxicas (IRET) and three
European institutions will offer a course in Environmental Chemistry (November 19-30,
2001) at the Universidad nacional and the Estación de Ciencias Marino Costeras (ECMAR).
The course will focus on organic substances. The objective of the course is
to introduce participants to the study of environmental chemistry of organic compositions
and its application in the differents fields of environmental sciences. The course
is aimed at professionals who work in research (environmental, chemical, biological and
toxicological sciences); post graduates can also apply. Topics to be covered are:
* Foundation and concepts of the chemical environment and
their methods of investigation
* Environmental contamination of organic substances:
sources, emission and flow of pollutants, the role of the
physical,
chemical and structural properties
* Analytic Chemical Environment
* Monitoring of contaminants
* Environmental outcome of the chemical contaminants,
distribution processes, transformation and bio-accumulatoin
* Bio-monitoring
* Prediction of the environmental effect of an organic pollutant
* Example of the prediction of the environmental fate and
exhibition
* Field studies
The cost of the course is US$500.00 (includes written materials, equipment use,
lab reagents, lunch and transport to the field work site); does not include
accommodation and other meals. Some scholarship may be obtained.

A meeting for the home aquarium people:
The Second International Conference on Marine Ornamentals Collection, Culture and
Conservation that will take place November 26 - December 1, 2001 at the Wyndham Palace
Resort and Spa in Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, USA. Abstracts are due June 1,
2001. Participation is open to all who are interested in addressing the problems caused by
the increasing exploitation of marine resources due to their use as marine ornamentals.
