Postgraduate studies in Marine Ecology

La Universidad del Mar, the University of the Sea, is offering M. Sc. and Ph.D. programs in marine ecology. The university is a public institution beautifully situated in the hills facing the sea in Puerto Angel, a city in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Applications are being received until the 13th of July, 2001 and should include the following documents in an official format:

  • Birth certificate
  • Diplomas
  • Documentation of the undergraduate studies and qualifications (with official seal of the university)
  • Short resume of the thesis (not more than one page)

A letter of application explaining the motives for the applicants wish to enter this education, the academic and professional expectations and the field of research of interest (not more than three pages)

The application forms can be found on the web site http://www.umar.mx or be requested from the office of the University in Puerto Angel (see below).

There are a limited number of scholarships available for those with high standing academic achievements.

Master’s Programme and Postgraduate Diploma in Human Ecology

The Department of Human Ecology at the Free University of Brussels is offering a Master’s Programme and Postgraduate Diploma in Human Ecology beginning in October, 2001. The Programme offers an education with an interdisciplinary approach to human-environment interactions and management.

The 2nd International Course in
Integrated Management of Coastal Resources

The Institute of Ecology A.C., México and Louisiana State University, USA are offering the 2nd International Course in Integrated Management of Coastal Resources in Xalapa, Vera Cruz, during the 18th of June until the 13th of July. Second International Conference on Marine Ornamentals Collection, Culture and Conservation

A meeting for the home aquarium people: The Second International Conference on Marine Ornamentals Collection, Culture and Conservation that will take place November 26 - December 1, 2001 at the Wyndham Palace Resort and Spa in Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, USA. Abstracts are due June 1, 2001. Participation is open to all who are interested in addressing the problems caused by the increasing exploitation of marine resources due to their use as marine ornamentals.

Integrated Marine Conservation Programme at Duke University

The Nicholas School of the Environment Marine Laboratory at Duke University is offering a summer course on the principles of conservation and preservation of marine habitats from July 9 to August 10, 2001, as part of the Integrated Marine Conservation Program.

Scholarships are available, and several are earmarked for international students. Dead-line for international scholarship applications is April 1. Applications for the Program are accepted until the program is full.

Short-course graduate workshop on sustainable tourism in small islands of the Caribbean

The Maryland Institute for Ecological Economics (IEE) and the Sustainable Economic Development Unit (SEDU) at the University of the West Indies, Trinidad, are holding a short-course graduate workshop for co-operative learning on the topic of sustainable tourism in small islands of the Caribbean in the Commonwealth of Dominica, the 18th to the 29th of June, 2001.

The workshop will be examining in particular the challenges, strategies and mechanisms to promote a tourism regime that can address issues of poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation. Funding sponsored by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation will provide scholarships for selected students to attend. Students from Caribbean universities are encouraged to apply for need-based financial aid. It is strongly recommended that applications be sent in by February 15.
