VIII Reunión de Especialistas en Tortugas Marinas de Latinoamérica

20 - 21 February, 2001, Philadelphia, U.S.A.

This meeting is held in conjunction with the International Sea Turtle Symposium each year and is a mechanism to consolidate agreements and to improve sea turtle conservation efforts of in Latin America. This event will focus on the condition and status of the leatherback turtle. For this reason, special activities have been planned as part of the programme.

During the symposium, there will also be a special workshop/seminar on Tuesday 28 February, 2001 on TREATIES, MOUs AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL INSTRUMENTS FOR SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION. The object of this satellite meeting would be to discuss, compare, evaluate, and where appropriate, promote various international instruments that are relevant to sea turtle conservation.

• The Action plan for the Conservation of Marine Turtles in the Mediterranean (RAC/SPA)
• SPAW Protocol for the Wider Caribbean
• The InterAmerican Convention for the protection and Conservation of Sea Turtles (IAC)

• The Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and management of marine Turtles in West Africa (CMS).

The Oceanography Society Biennial Scientific Meeting and Oceanology International Americas 2001 Conference and Exhibition

2 - 5 April, 2001, Miami Beach Convention Centre, Florida, U.S.A.

This program will span a broad range of topics in oceanography and the day-by-day session themes will allow a focus on interdisciplinary topics and research enabled through advanced technology. The themes are:

1. Air-Sea Interactions,
2. The Water Column, and
3. The Seafloor.

The meeting format will include plenary sessions of invited and contributed talks on the daily session themes and contributed posters focusing on, but not limited to, the session topics.

This meeting will be particularly special as it will be held in conjunction with the Oceanology International Americas 2001 Conference and Exhibition. This larger meeting format is well known for its wealth of exhibits related to ocean science and technology.

ABSTRACTS are due on January 15, 2001. There is no registration fee for the TOS Scientific Meeting or the OI Conference and Exhibition.

Managing Beaches in the Caribbean: Investing in our Future

21 –25 May, 2001, Puerto Rico

This conference is being hosted jointly by the University of Puerto Rico Sea Grant College programme and UNESCO’s COSALC (Coast and Beach Stability in the Caribbean).

The goals of the conference are to improve the management of Caribbean beaches through:

• the sharing of information about beach management;
• the establishment of a network for those involved in the management of beaches;
• the maximization of beach resources through the development of linkages between the tourism industry, environmental regulatory agencies, coastal communities, beach users and the general public; and
• the promotion of government investment and public-private partnerships in beach management and support services.

Conference topics include:

• Beach water quality
• Beach services
• Beach erosion mitigation and ecosystem management
• Management of beach user conflicts
• Financial aspects
• Coordination of beach management

26^th Annual Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) Conference

27 May – 02 June, 2001, Maho Bay Hotel, St. Martin.

The theme for this year’s conference is "The Emerging Caribbean: Direction and Purpose for the 21^st century." All Caribbean scholars are invited to submit proposals, either for presenting papers, for organizing panels focused on particular topics, or for participation in roundtable sessions.

Proposals for papers, panels or roundtables must be submitted by September 30, 2000. Completed papers will be due by January 31, 2001.

The Programme Committee intends to include interaction with and participation from scholars and students in St. Martin. Therefore, sessions are being developed that may occur off-site from the conference center. The conference will also include a trip to Anguilla on Friday, June 1^st, that will provide an opportunity for scholars to meet with government officials to discuss matters of importance to the Caribbean from the perspective of government.

4^th Internation Symposium on Computer Mapping and GIS for Coastal Zone Management

This symposium is dedicated to GIS for the coastal zone. It follows in the tradition of excellence and intimacy of the previous CoastGIS symposia held in Cork, Aberdeen and Brest. Second Symposium on Marine Conservation Biology

30^th Scientific Meeting of the Association of Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean - AMLC

The Association of Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean (AMLC) are holding the 30^th Scientific Meeting of the Association, hosted by the Department of Marine Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico in June 24 - 29, 2001.

First Annual Caribbean GIS Conference

9 - 12 September, 2001, Montego Bay, Jamaica

The Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) is hosting the conference, which will feature work shops, a comprehensive educational program and an exhibition.
