Harmful Algal Bloom Programme – 2000 the First North-American and Caribbean Training Course on Marine Toxins and Harmful Algal Blooms
24 November – 10 December, 2000, La Paz, Mexico

This event is co-sponsored by the Northwest Centre for Biological research (CIBNOR) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commision (IOC) of UNESCO. The objectives of the course include:

  • to disseminate basic knowledge on Toxic Phytoplankton, strengthening some aspects such as the taxonomy and distribution of harmful algae
  • the determination of phycotoxins and
  • the development of monitoring programmes

The course will be held in the Spanish language.

Second Meeting of the Ad-Hoc IOCaribe-GOOS Advisory Group

WTO/UNEP International Conference on Sustainable Tourism in the Islands of the Asia-Pacific Region
6 - 8 December, 2000, Sanya, Island of Hainan, China

The purpose of this Conference is to examine the various aspects which need to be considered by governments and the private sector of small islands, if they wish tourism to contribute to the overall economic, social and environmental sustainability of their territories. That means developing a tourism infrastructure and a tourism industry which are sustainable in the long term, maximising the social and economic benefits and reducing the negative impacts on the environment.

The presentations by the WTO and UNEP experts at the Conference will be supplemented by the analysis of successful case studies presented by representatives of small island developing States (SIDS) and other islands of the Asia-Pacific region. The Conference workshops and general debates will allow participants to draw valuable conclusions and make recommendations, including follow-up actions at the international level with the support of WTO and UNEP.

Ramsar Training Workshop
11-15 December, 2000, Trinidad

This workshop will serve as a forum for highlighting the benefits and obligations of being a Party to the Ramsar Convention as well as the Protocol on Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife for the Wider Caribbean (SPAW). Presentations will be made by representatives from the Bahamas, Belize, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad as well as on the SPAW Protocol: its benefits, obligations and linkages to relevant biodiversity treaties. Some other topics for discussion include - Criteria for site designation of Ramsar sites, Definition of Wetlands and Wise Use of Wetlands as well as case studies from several countries. The Workshop will also include a field trip to the Nariva Swamp.

IAS Tsunami Workshop
19 – 21 December , 2000, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico

The objectives of the workshop are :

  • to provide an opportunity to researchers, operators of seismic and tsunami warning systems and decision-makers from the Intra-Americas Sea and the Pacific to share their experiences in tsunami mitigation and warning in order to enhance co-operation and avoid duplication of efforts;
  • to identify the needs for the establishment of the regional tsunami warning system, taking into account the knowledge gained by other regions in the same field;
  • to develop an action plan aimed on the finalization of the project proposal for the IAS tsunami warning system and identify means of communication within the region and to government and non-government organizations; and
  • to enhance the interface between researchers, operators and decision-makers within the tsunami warning system project.

The Workshop language is English but some information papers will be available in French and Spanish.

Third International Symposium on Wetlands
30 January – 2 February, 2001, Cienaga de Zapata, Matanzas, Cuba

This scientific meeting, being organised by the Centro Nacional de Areas Protegidas (CNAP) and the Delegation of the Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente (CITMA) of the province of Matanzas, will serve as the forum for the sharing of experiences on subjects of common interest to the international scientific community. Subjects for discussion will include but are not limited to :

  • Integrated Management;
  • Conservation Policies;
  • Community Developments;
  • Environmental Education and Information; and
  • International Cooperation for Conservation.

These discussions will assist in implementing scientific, economic and social activities which will lead to the protection and sustainable use of these complex and fragile ecosystems, elevate the quality of life of local communities and their involvement in environmental projects and the management of natural resources. The main topics will include biological diversity, conservation and management and economy and community/society.

Deadline for registration is 30 October, 2000.

TOS Biennial Scientific Meeting and Oceanology International Americas 2001 Conference and Exhibition
2 - 5 April, 2001, Miami Beach Convention Centre, Florida, U.S.A.

This program will span a broad range of topics in oceanography and the day-by-day session themes will allow a focus on interdisciplinary topics and research enabled through advanced technology. The themes are:

  1. Air-Sea Interactions,
  2. The Water Column, and
  3. The Seafloor.

The meeting format will include plenary sessions of invited and contributed talks on the daily session themes and contributed posters focusing on, but not limited to, the session topics.

This meeting will be particularly special as it will be held in conjunction with the Oceanology International Americas 2001 Conference and Exhibition. This larger meeting format is well known for its wealth of exhibits related to ocean science and technology.

Managing Beaches in the Caribbean: Investing in our Future
21 –25 May, 2001, Puerto Rico

This conference is being hosted jointly by the University of Puerto Rico Sea Grant College programme and UNESCO’s COSALC (Coast and Beach Stability in the Caribbean).

The goals of the conference are to improve the management of Caribbean beaches through:

  • the sharing of information about beach management;
  • the establishment of a network for those involved in the management of beaches;
  • the maximization of beach resources through the development of linkages between the tourism industry, environmental regulatory agencies, coastal communities, beach users and the general public; and
  • the promotion of government investment and public-private partnerships in beach management and support services.

26th Annual Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) Conference
27 May – 02 June, 2001, Maho Bay Hotel, St. Martin.

The theme for this year’s conference is "The Emerging Caribbean: Direction and Purpose for the 21st century." All Caribbean scholars are invited to submit proposals, either for presenting papers, for organizing panels focused on particular topics, or for participation in roundtable sessions.

Proposals for papers, panels or roundtables must be submitted by September 30, 2000. Completed papers will be due by January 31, 2001.

The Programme Committee intends to include interaction with and participation from scholars and students in St. Martin. Therefore, sessions are being developed that may occur off-site from the conference center. The conference will also include a trip to Anguilla on Friday, June 1st, that will provide an opportunity for scholars to meet with government officials to discuss matters of importance to the Caribbean from the perspective of government.

Second Symposium on Marine Conservation Biology

The Second Symposium will be a forum for established researchers and students in the natural and social sciences (including oceanography, marine biology, fisheries science and anthropology) and for science-minded managers and others interested in the science of protecting, restoring and sustainably using biodiversity in the world’s estuaries, coastal waters, enclosed seas and open seas. It will feature
