A mini-symposium "Coral Reef Non-indigenous and Invasive Species" is planned for the 9th International Coral Reef Symposium to be held in Bali, October 23-27, 2000. 53rd Annual Meeting of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute November 6-10, 2000 at the Isle of Capri Casino Crowne Plaza Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi, USA. Suggested themes for the 53rd meeting include, but are not limited to these topics:
Abstracts not exceeding 300 words, must be received by 01 June 2000 and may be in English, French, or Spanish. Abstracts submitted in French or Spanish must be accompanied with an English translation. Abstracts of contributed papers should be submitted to: Le Roy Creswell An international conference of the Invasive Species Specialist Group of IUCN February 19-23, 2001 at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Papers presented and discussion sessions will be strictly limited to the subject of: "Eradication of invasive species from islands; methods used and the results achieved." The term eradicating may include work to remove invasive species where complete eradication is some, or many, years away but the methods used to date are achieving positive results or providing a significant learning experience. The term island may include true islands, natural habitat islands (e.g. ponds), remnant and artificial habitat islands (e.g. reserves), or new invasions of natural ecosystems where eradication was deemed feasible. Preference will be given to papers which provide detail of the techniques used or of the ecosystem response to the work. Significant learning experiences may include methods, which failed. A one full day field trip to locations appropriate to the eradication of invasives theme will be offered. Registration will open on 1 July 2000 and forms will be available on the website or posted or emailed on request to the Conference Manager. The draft scientific programme will be available on the ISSG Web site by 15 November 2000. The title of your presentation is requested by June 15, 2000.
