Training Programme for Marine Protected Areas
In previous issues of CEPNEWS, UNEP-CAR/RCU has informed about the development of course modules and manual for an upcoming MPA training course, We are happy to announce that through funding from the Coastal Zone Management Centre (CZMC) of the Netherlands, the UN Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP) created from the Ted Turner's Grant and the CTF, CAR/RCU has initiated preparations for the convening of the first "Training of Trainers" course on Marine Protected Area Management which will be held in Saba, Netherlands Antilles, 2-13 November 1999. This first course is targetted for a maximum of 12 MPA managers and alike from the English-speaking Caribbean currently involved with MPA management. Participants must have basic knowledge in marine and coastal resources concepts and issues and will be required to implement training activities at the local level after participating in the course by adapting as appropriate the regional course material. Funding will be available for participants to attend the course, as well as for the implementation of the local training activities by the trained MPA managers. This course is a part of SPAW's long-term "Training of Trainers" protected area programme, which emphasizes the provision of training and communication skills participants to train others. A second training of trainers course for MPA managers from Spanish speaking countries is being planned for April/May 2000 under the same criteria. Interested potential participants in these courses should contact UNEP-CAR/RCU and provide brief information on their background and current involvement on MPA management.
In preparation for the training and to assess the training needs of marine protected areas of the region, an Experts Consultation to Review and Finalize Materials for Marine Protected Area Training in the Wider Caribbean was sponsored by the government of the Netherlands and held in Kingston, Jamaica (Continued on page 8)
