SPAW Sub-programme
Species Conservation
The work of the SPAW Sub-programme include activities on
conservation of threatened and endangered species, including, in collaboration
with relevant institutions, updating, maintenance and dissemination of the SPAW
species database, selection and implementation of priority actions contained in
the national sea turtle recovery plans, preparation of additional recovery
plans for sea turtles, support to the Index Monitoring Site for hawksbill sea
turtles, and fundraising for the continued implementation of the regional
manatee management plan. Other vital activities under this component include
support to relevant actions resulting from the regional review of the fisheries
management in the Caribbean with partners such as CARICOM- Caribbean Regional
Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) and UN Food and Agricultural Organisation – Western
Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (FAO-WECAFC), as well as development of the
regional action plan and conservation programme for marine mammals, which will
include the convening of a regional experts workshop, organised by the SPAW/RAC
in early 2005.
The SPAW Species Database is now available online.
