AMEP Sub-Programme
Overview and Objectives
The AMEP Programme concerns the assessment and management of environmental pollution and provides regional co-ordination for the implementation of the Protocol concerning Pollution from Land-based Sources and Activities (LBS Protocol) and the Protocol concerning Co-operation in Combating Oil Spills in the Wider Caribbean Region (Oil Spills Protocol). AMEP supports the activities required for the establishment of necessary measures to prevent, reduce and control marine pollution and to assist in the development of integrated environmental planning and management of coastal and marine areas. This Programme is responsible for the regionalization of global agreements such as the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA), Agenda 21, and the Basel Convention.
The objectives of the AMEP programme are:
- To support the implementation of the LBS and Oil Spills Protocols.
- To assist the countries of the region in integrated environmental planning and management related to the use of coastal and marine areas and their resources
- To assist the Governments of the region, upon their request, in the development of guidelines regarding the application of regulations and economic steering instruments in the decision-making process toward the establishment and enforcement of measures necessary to prevent, reduce and control marine pollution and to provide them with the relevant information.
