The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Caribbean Environment Programme, Regional Co-ordinating Unit, as the Secretariat of the Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment of the Wider Caribbean Region signed a Memorandum of Understanding on April 2, 2007 at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria.
This formalizes the collaborative work for the promotion of integrated coastal zone management and the development and improvement of national and regional capacity to help reduce degradation of the coastal and marine ecosystems of the Wider Caribbean Region.
The IAEA approved a Technical Cooperation project from 2007-2010 involving all Members States in the Greater Caribbean on the “Use of Nuclear Techniques to Address the Management Problems of Coastal Zones in the Caribbean Region, RLA/7/012”. This project aims to develop and improve capabilities to reduce the degradation of the coastal ecosystems of the wider Caribbean region by using nuclear techniques to support integrated coastal zone management.
The formal collaboration with UNEP-CAR/RCU also paves the way for other future initiatives related to environmental management, not only in the Caribbean region but to the rest of Latin America.
