Terms of Reference for an Internship on Communication, Education, Training and Awareness within the Caribbean Environment Programme
The post offers an
opportunity for a current student to become acquainted with the workings of an
intergovernmental treaty dealing with the conservation and sustainable use of
natural resources and, more specifically, coastal and marine protection and
development. Under the overall supervision of the Coordinator of UNEP-CAR/RCU,
the Intern
will provide overall support and assistance to the Coordinator of the Caribbean
Environment Programme and its sub programmes.
Period: The period of this task is of 3-6 months.
Location: Kingston, JAMAICA
Rationale: The Caribbean Environment Programme is facilitated
by the Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (CAR/RCU) located in Kingston,
Jamaica. CAR/RCU serves as the Secretariat for the Action Plan of the CEP as
well as for the Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine
Environment of the Wider Caribbean Region (Cartagena Convention). CAR/RCU does
not conduct any research itself, but serves as a focus for the collection,
review and dissemination of studies, publications and the result of work
performed under the aegis of CEP.

Content and methodology of the supervision: General objectives, desired results and anticipated problems are discussed beforehand with the Intern. Regular feedback on the progress of activities is obtained by the supervisor through review of work in progress. The Intern is expected to carry out the duties under general supervision and to consult with the supervisor(s) on issues of policy or other sensitive matters.
Duties, responsibilities and output expectations:
The
Secretariat works with limited support staff resources. Interns have also to be
prepared to assist with the routine administrative work of the Secretariat,
e.g. preparing correspondence. The tasks will not involve fieldwork.
Technical/Programmatic
- Assist in the development and implementation of the CEP Communication and Outreach Strategy;
- Assit in the preparation of the Training of Training course for MPA managers and related follow-up activities;
- Design and prepare exhibitions for CEP participation in different fora as well as for expositions;
- Carry out an inventory of CETA material available from CEP and identify gaps with regards to the programmes;
- Assist in the production or compilation of other information resources including posters, leaflets, education packs, etc, as identified in consultation with technical staff, on the marine environment, conservation and management, for dissemination to the various stakeholders;
- Assist in creating a clearinghouse mechanism for CETA and expand and update the CEP website;
- Compile and disseminate news and updates on projects via newsgroups and listservers;
- Liaise with regional and national organisations involved in CETA and identify synergies and possible areas of cooperation;
- Assist in developing and maintaining links with national/regional and, where appropriate, international media in order to raise awareness within all stakeholder groups and the wider community of the CEP, and of projects and activities in the WCR;
- Assist in coordinating support to regional and national CETA initiatives; and
- Assist the Coordinator of UNEP-CAR/RCU as appropriate.
Administrative
- Assist in the preparation of relevant documentation;
- Collect information and undertake desk-based research;
- Assist in replying to inquiries received by CEP;
- Report to the Coordinator; and
- Assist in the organisation of CEP meetings as appropriate.
Reporting
The Intern shall work under the supervision of and report to the Coordinator of UNEP-CAR/RCU. Before the end of the Internship a final report shall be submitted to the RCU outlining the work undertaken and an evaluation of the same. The report shall be written in English and its final draft completed a week prior to the end of the internship, and shall include recommendations to UNEP-CAR/RCU on further development of the areas of the CETA programme that the incumbent worked with during the internship.
Required qualifications, skills and experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential, good working knowledge of Spanish and/or French desired;
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a social science, or a media / communication discipline will be required, with some relevant experience seen as an advantage. Alternatively, enrolled in an appropriate biological/environmental science, with relevant graduate experience in media, education and/or marketing.
- The ability to successfully present information to a lay/public audience (e.g. media, journalism and/or marketing experience);
- Good organisational ability, and the ability to work well as part of a team, and to take a leadership role when required;
- Some website maintenance experience desired, and
- The ability to use design/graphics programmes (e.g. PageMaker 7.0, Photoshop 7.0) to produce leaflets, posters, booklets and newsletters;
Remuneration
The Internship is without remuneration and the Intern is solely responsible for covering costs for transport, living and accommodation, as well as for insurance during the internship period.
