North America Maps and Databases

The following datasets are available for North America. A short description is associated with a sample graphic of the data, detailed information and an option to download data.

DRAINAGE BASINS
A global digital elevation model at 30 arcsecond resolution (approximately 1 kilometer) at the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) EROS Data Center (EDC), labeled as GTOPO30, has made it possible to obtain derivative products for hydrologic studies. The river basins for North America were extracted and subsequently vectorized and tagged with attributes according to the numbering scheme developed by Otto Pfafstetter, a Brazilian engineer.   Additional information can be found on the EDC's Hydro 1K North America page.
