Assessment & Management of Environmental Pollution (AMEP)

The AMEP Sub-programme (Assessment and Management of Environmental Pollution) concerns the assessment and management of environmental pollution and provides regional co-ordination for the implementation of the Protocol concerning Pollution from Land-based Sources and Activities (LBS Protocol) and the Protocol concerning Co-operation in Combating Oil Spills in the Wider Caribbean Region (Oil Spills Protocol).

Goal

To control, prevent and reduce pollution of the coastal and marine environment from land and marine-based sources and activities thereby enabling Countries of the Wider Caribbean to meet their obligations under the Land Based Sources of Marine Pollution and Oil Spills Protocols of the Cartagena Convention

Objectives

Coordinate and oversee the day-to-day implementation of AMEP Projects and activities within the framework of the Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP);

Ensure that the formulation and implementation of projects and activities satisfy the obligations of the LBS and Oil Spills Protocols;

Promote ratification of, accession to, and effective implementation of the LBS and Oil Spills Protocols;

Enhance coordination, collaboration and communication with relevant regional and international organizations in the development and  implementation of AMEP projects and activities; and 

Enhance involvement of LBS and Oil Spills Regional Activity Centers (RAC) in the design and implementation of AMEP’s projects and activities.

The AMEP Sub-Programme assists with the regionalisation of global agreements and initiatives such as Agenda 21, Barbados Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Programme of Action, Millennium Development Goals (MDG), Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI), and the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-Based Activities (GPA).  It also supports the implementation of multilateral environmental agreements such as the BASEL Convention on Hazardous Wastes, the London Dumping Convention and the MARPOL Convention.

About the CEP

The Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP) is one of the UNEP administered Regional Seas Programmes.
